Belnorth People - Honours & Awards

A Belnorth team that has shown outstanding commitment, dedication and achievement in promoting the spirit of the game of football, and in advancing the development of the team members and therefore the image and well being of the Belnorth Club.

This is the most recent of our Memorial Awards and embodies the idea of a team spirit award to capture the way that Sue O’Dwyer approached life with her family and friends nearby.  Since her passing Sue’s husband Gerry has spoken at each presentation day and assisted with the presentation of the award. It is with great pleasure that we not only present this award to a deserving team, but also to honour Gerry with Belnorth Life Membership alongside Sue who is sadly no longer with us.

2009 - Open U13 Div 1

In 2009 the Belnorth Under 13 Division 1 team  marked up an impressive list of achievements including winners of the Lightning Tournament, undefeated winners of the Kanga Cup (Cup) competition and undefeated under 13 Division 1 champions.

In the course of winning the Division One championship the team conceded only 7 goals and can claim the best defensive record of any junior league team in Canberra.  Many of the members of the team distinguished themselves with representative honours for either their school, District or ACT.

The teams achievements this year have been built on team work and the commitment of each individual in the team.  When required each member of the team stepped up and did what needed to be done when required with each always working to support the other members of the team.  All members of the team regularly attended training and were willing to help in the training and development of younger age groups.  Whilst competitive the team played their games with a high level of camaraderie and sportsmanship.

The team also contributed to club activities with players from the team regularly refereeing and supporting other teams.  The team also worked together to raise funds for an end of season trip and assisted in support activities during the Kanga Cup Tournament.

2008 - Girls U16 Div 1

All the players from the 16/1 girls team have demonstrated an outstanding commitment and dedication in achieving in promoting the spirit of the game of soccer and advancing the developing and assisting other team players in the development of fitness, skills and discipline.

The squad of 17 players showed remarkable flexibility by supporting each other and the team. For example, due to various players not being unavailable for selection, all played in at least four different positions throughout the year and no player complained about playing out of their normal playing position. Players considered this a challenge in developing their skills and commitment towards the team.

Throughout the league season and Kanga Cup, several opposition team coaches and referees commented on the sprit and discipline displayed by all the players, which was also demonstrated by an exemplary discipline record by not receiving a caution throughout the season in both competitions.

To summarise the spirit and sportsmanship of the team, following the last game of the season, the players invited Woden United players to join them in celebrating winning the League Championship, further highlighting the image and well being of Belnorth Football Club.

2007 - Girls U15 Div 1 & Boys U18 Div 2

Under 15 Division 1 Girls

This team has shown outstanding dedication, commitment and achievement, not only to our club, but also to the sport of football as a whole.

They finished the Division 1 competition in an undefeated state. Additionally during the Kanga Cup Competition they won their division convincingly. The esprit de corps they developed teamed with the sheer enthusiasm of youth was and still remains a mixture bound for success.

Sportsmanship within the team was beyond reproach. At no time during the 2007 season, did they forget that the other side was on the pitch for the same reason as they - to have fun whilst being active and to improve.

Each of them improved as players and demonstrated that they are young ladies that any parent would be proud to call their own. They have shown that they are a credit to their club, their parents, but most importantly, themselves.

Under 18 Division 2

The players who took part in the 2007 season as part of the under 18 division two team have shown us all what the spirit of football is all about.

The normal rush of late registrations did not happen in this age group as we had expected and this meant that the boys very rarely had anything that would resemble a full team on any given day. To their credit this self managed squad would play against a full compliment of opposition players with sometimes as low as seven or eight men on the park. Even with these odds stacked against them they were able to dig deep and win a handful of games.

2006 - Girls U15 United & Boys U15 Div 1

Under 15 Division 1 Girls - United

A decision was made at the start of the year to play the under 14 girls up into the under 15 age group. This gave the girls an opportunity to expand their knowledge and enhance their skills. The girls willingly undertook all of the activities planned for the team. Apart from their competitive games the team took part in the Merimbula, Woden Lightning, Kanga Cup, Cowra and Young competitions. Through their enthusiasm and sportsmanship they were good ambassadors for Belnorth.

Under 15 Division 1 Boys

The under 15 div 1 boys completed their season under difficult circumstances. Within a few weeks of the start of the season the team lost 11 players and their coach. However, the remaining players and those from division 2 combined well showing their passion for the game. They played their games with a high level of sportsmanship which was often commented upon by spectators as well as officials from opposing teams.

2005 - Boys U11 Div 1

In the 2005 season, the team played their first year of competitive football. They marked up an impressive list of achievements. They were:

  • Age group champions
  • Undefeated in the ACT comp
  • Runners up in their group in the Kanga Cup (following a tough final against a very strong team, Sydney United)
  • Runners up to the undefeated under 12 age group champions (Monaro, in the Young Tournament)
  • All showed up to training
  • Always willing to help training of younger age groups
  • The stronger players helped the less stronger players develop
  • All through the year both in comp games and tournaments their behaviour was excellent which portrayed Belnorth in the most positive of ways.
